AN 18-BORE FLINTLOCK HOLSTER-PISTOL SIGNED 'L. GOUNA?', no visible serial number,
circa 1715 and almost certainly produced in Liege, with swamped 13 3/4in. barrel (light pitting), carved, raised tapering sighting plane, long blade fore-sight, chiselled acanthus foliage at the breech and two unidentified makers marks, the octagonal breech-end engraved with further acanthus leaves to the top-flat, top-tang grooved for sighting, gilded brass lock with moulded border and sparse foliate engraving, faceted pan, frizzen and hammer jaws (top-jaw screw broken but present), figured walnut full-stock (repaired at butt) carved with acanthus foliage around the top-tang with further light carving along the ramrod channel and around the lock, gilded bulbous brass pommel with long spurs and moulded overlapping lobes, pierced sideplate featuring opposing, winged, trumpet-blowing cherubs seated within foliate strapwork, some issuing forth from serpent heads, and bisected with a grotesque mask, pierced vacant crowned escutcheon above a further grotesque mask at wrist. turned ramrod pipes and replacement ramrod, much original gilt finish remaining
