* A RARE 17mm (RIMFIRE) SNIDER-CONVERTED DANISH MODEL 1853/66 BREECH-LOADING NAVAL RIFLE BY PIRLOT FRERES, serial no. 333,
circa 1848, with 27 1/2in. barrel rifled with five grooves and fitted with a Brunswick style bayonet bar at muzzle, block and blade front-sight and quadrant rear-sight to 800 yards, the positive bolt locked breech block stamped with a small Danish crown inspection stamp, side-action lock stamped with makers name 'PIRLOT FRERES A LIEGE', regulation brass mounted full walnut stock, Brunswick style trigger-guard, the left side of the butt with raised cheek-rest, action slightly at fault

Provenance: This rare and interesting rifle started life as a Model 1848 Bagladeriffel (pillar breech) rifle, one of a quantity purchased from the Liege trade, this example by Pirlot Freres. Used in the three years war (1848-51) by the rebels of Schleswig-Holstein. They were later refurbished and upgraded at Kronborg 1853-55 then issued to the Danish Navy as the Model 1853 naval rifle. Between 1866 and 1868 many were converted to Snider breech loaders
